Bombyx mori by behindinfinity Bombyx mori by behindinfinity
Request:
"A...*shy* silkworm. xD I'm sorry if it's random. Well, it's just I know someone who really likes silkworm but I'm just dunno how to start a conversation with him. Maybe if I show it to him he'll say thank you (duh) and I can finally have the courage to talk to him. (lol. it sounded like a drama letter) anyway, a silkworm if you can or if you feel like to draw it. :)" from A.

About a month ago, I posted on my Facebook page that I was open to doing some art requests because I felt the need to practice drawing things apart from my own ideas. :)

I was happy to take on the challenge of using an interesting animal like a silkworm (Bombyx mori) as the subject of a drawing, especially considering I hardly ever draw insects and never before a silkworm. More importantly though, I was drawn to the earnest wish behind the request.

There is still a great deal I hope to improve, but this was definitely educational!

This is the first sketch that I've managed to polish up into something relatively presentable, however still pretty rough. So sorry! So many things have been piling up! But I'm still working on some others during my free time :D

:note: Dear A., I did not include your full pseudonym so as to avoid compromising your privacy, but if you'd rather I not share your comment as well, kindly just send me a note/message and I will gladly take it down! I just have this tendency to ramble on about stories behind the images I post. And I do hope this drawing isn't too late!

I think a silkworm is a beautiful metaphor for a new beginning. I hope A. enjoys this and talks to that boy! :)

You did a lovely job here. The muted colors make me think of nighttime and the silkworm itself is very well rendered.

You did a very nice job. I like your usage of colores. The silkworm is the best part, very well done. If I didn't have the description section to shed more light on this, I would have guessed it was an illistration from a book. :) Very nicely done!

interesting idea, interesting concept, and well executed. I can feel the Bombyx mori's shyness, no lie. Maybe it is the turning of its body, or the muted colors? I like it :)
Is this watercolor? I'm curious how you got the blue streak in the background, the effect looks like reflective water puddle..

I really like the overall composition of this. It looks like a cover for a book, album, or something. I like the silkworm's pose too. It looks so engaged. I like how you incorporate the pupa too. I think I see the silkmoth's wings there too. It's subtle, but nice.

I recognized the name right away! I love silkworms! They're so cute and fat. I normally don't like moths, but silkmoths stay as fat. They're so fat, they can't fly, so that makes them not at all scary. CUTE!

The only guy in my fashion program was obsessed with bombyx Mori after we had our unit on silk. He even made a necklace with a clay one he had molded. He was doodling little worm on his papers and everything. For his final project he did a presentation on the bombyx mori.

I think silkworms are the only cute caterpillar/worm/bug type animals. Everything else looks gross in real life. Maybe that's just because I had them as pets when I was a kid though.
What medium is this? Watercolor or something?

I think a lot of legless animals look cute, but so many grow up to be ugly, scary, and made of nightmares. Silkworms stay cute. Silkmoths are so damn chubby and cute! Hng!

I had them as pets too. :)

YAY~ Having things as pets really changes your view of them. Caterpillars are a LOT less cute than silkworms, but butterflies are pretty until you zoom in on their torsos. Normal moths are kinda gross all the way through.

I guess I'm just really not a bug person, but seriously, the only thing cuter than silkworms and silkmoths are kittens. And they hurt if you try to pick them up. Silkworms just curl up and you're like D'AWWWWWWW
