Hopeful and determined, Yahiko often expressed his desire to be stronger. Young as he was, his heart was mature enough to acknowledge that true strength was not merely the use of brute force to knock down his opponents. He was grateful to Kaoru for teaching him swordsmanship, but the greatest lesson that he learned was from Kenshin:
"I want you to understand something. If you should lose, not only does your future end, but also the future of the one you are trying to protect. Defeat isn’t an option for the sword that protects others. You should keep that one thought engraved in your heart."
