Pin-up Girl Next Door by behindinfinity Pin-up Girl Next Door by behindinfinity
This idea for this drawing was inspired by the way soldiers in the past would post pin-ups onto their lockers or bring them along during combat as morale boosters.

I wanted to focus on the playful but wholesome side of pin-ups. I decided to design a pin-up girl for a modern guy maybe depicting that special girl next door who shares his interest in stuff like Lord of the Rings, and whose laugh can turn bad days around. I drew an image he might keep in mind to get him through particularly rough days. :)

I kept the rendering and colors relatively simple because this is meant to go on a shirt. I got the idea to draw it because of the pin-up design challenge on Threadless.

While working on this, I was listening to "You Always Make Me Smile" by Kyle Andrews :pointr: [link] It's a catchy, upbeat, happy song that kept me going even when I nearly tossed this illustration completely.

I like your messy hair
I like the clothes you wear
I like the way you sing, and when you dance with me
Ready set, here we go

I don't know why, I love you
I just know I can't stop thinking of you
Oh, wait (Oh oh oh oh oh)
It's 'cause you make me smile
(Oh oh oh oh oh)
You always make me smile
(Whoo!)

I love how this is true to the character of the Girl Next Door and yet true to the style of pin-ups ;)

With what you described as the "Girl Next Door", my boyfriend would agree that I fit into that category o.O
At first glance out on the street, many people probably don't realize that I am a cosplayer--I'm a pretty average looking girl: very skinny, round face, short hair, glasses--and that I geek out over things like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. My boyfriend even said my laugh was one of the first things that made him attracted to me =P

Maybe it's just me but I hardly see these things anymore, probably because you'd tend to see this on your hard drive than printed on paper. :XD:

I also think doing pinups ain't easy, it's hard to find the right mix of sexy/beautiful/cute in the pose. Personally I'd tilt her head in an angle a bit and raase her right shoulder a bit more but this is pretty much okay. =)

(I spy with my little eye a bit of underwear ;P)

Your suggestions sound spot-on, actually! I'll take note of that, thanks! :D I feel I've always struggled with my figures lacking a bit of dynamism, and I'm trying harder now to improve on that.

Hipster glasses. Two-toned shoes. No panty shot. Holding the book wrong. No thumbs at right hand. Not reading the book. Heart buttons. 2D. 2/10 would not bang :icontrollrollplz:.

Tough cookies, she's not for the likes of youuuuu :iconforeveraloneplz:
(And the hand holding the book — I referenced that from a photo of myself, which I took while I was trying to figure out if the position of a pin-up girl I saw was realistic. Thumb is on the other side of the book holding it in place. )

A very sweet feeling, & you definitely catch the essence of a pin-up girl <3 (But it would be even more lovely if you have her lips a bit pinker? 'cause the 40s pin-up girls has heavy emphasis on the lips, they love it in red, so yeah XP) But I do like the way you have her eyes look, very lovely (& a good inspiration for real life makeup XD)

Hope to see more from you, oh yes more pin-up girls *W*

Did you digitalize it through vector/vexel? It looks great! :D Rather for me, it looks like it would motivate us girls to study and be beautiful at the same time! :)
