We're All Mad Here

While the Cheshire Cat is not present here (or maybe it is ) I could not help using a line from one of my favorite parts of the book as the title for this photo.

Alice: But I don't want to go among mad people.
The Cat: Oh, you can't help that. We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.
Alice: How do you know I'm mad?
The Cat: You must be. Or you wouldn't have come here.

Shoot info
I was invited by Darz Pobre to be part of this teaser shoot for their Wonderland-themed Washday.

This is a photograph taken at a studio; it is not a photomanipulation. The background is a panel of patterned fabric that was mounted on the wall. The tea party set is real. Studio lighting was utilized for the vignette effect and to help give me that doll-like quality.

Costume
Here I am as the Mad Hatter. This was not entirely based on any existing adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, but the hat that Mr. Felix made and the makeup style that Ms. Jam applied on me was heavily based on Johnny Depp's portrayal of the Hatter in the recent film release.

The eye and hair color were just arbitrary decisions, really. Truth be told, I did not know what the costume would look like until I got on the set (for the record - it was faaabulous ). I just brought along a suitcase of wigs and contacts and let them pick which suited their vision.

Makeup
I think this is the first time I've had this kind of intense makeup done, and it surprised me how the cheek contouring appeared to change the shape of my face. My nose got a bit of a makeover as well. I think the crazy colors around my eyes helped make me look more appropriately mad, and it was paired with some magenta lip color (that smelled like candy).

A small part of me felt like Jareth the Goblin King.


On the topic of madness, I suppose it's worth mentioning that I enjoyed this exchange between the Hatter and Alice in the recent film release by Tim Burton. It went something like...

"Have I gone mad?"
"I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are."

I certainly hope so. I may have been far too comfortable with this role.
