The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Fanime 2008

Some of you may have already read Miguels' journal entry concerning this, but for those of you who haven't...

Miguel ~merkymerx and I were talking one night, and we got to the topic of conventions in other countries. Apparently there's a small chance that we'll both be going to the US sometime this summer (for us, that's around April-May) and if our plans do push through, we decided we just HAVE to attend at least one con while we're in the States! We looked up event dates and decided that considering the details of our stay, the con we have the biggest chance of catching is Fanime. The thing is, here's all we know about it so far:

That is... not a lot. So what pieces of advice would you give to a couple of big convention noobs like us? A few questions we have:

1. Is it possible for passes to sell out? We're not entirely sure about the trip yet so we haven't registered online.

2. Is it difficult to get lodging? Do the nearby hotels get solidly booked right away?

3. How is on-site registration (in case we fail to do it online)? Is it absolute hell or not so bad, or does it depend on the time of day?

4. What kind of activities are there in Fanime?

5. Should we watch out for, er, particular types of people? I mean, I've been randomly glomped from behind a few times and we've gotten weird picture requests but that's about it, I think. Con-goers here are usually pretty tame.

And feel free to share your experiences or just random bits of advice.
