Cosmania X was unlike any other event we've been to here in the Philippines. For one thing, it was an event centered on simply celebrating the fact that a cosplay community exists and has thrived in our country for a decade. You know how, say, ToyCon is mainly for toy collectors, and Metro Comic Con is primarily for comic enthusiasts - they just happen to include a cosplay competition and allow us costumed geeks run around. As for Cosmania, all the events and activities lined up were conceptualized for cosplayers, by cosplayers.
This is going to be a very long, very image-heavy post. You've been warned!
Cosmania X: Day One!
EJ is the EJescalator! ...Wait, that doesn't sound right.
This is one of our favorite photos from the first day. Alfred ~shimekops
took this when we escaped from the main convention hall for a bit to have an impromptu photoshoot. We called it Mari-Con.
We don't usually see Mari cosplayers around here, so imagine our surprise when we suddenly had three variations of Mari Illustrious Makinami on the same day! In Mari's newer pink plugsuit is Czari
. In the Provisional Unit-05 plugsuit is Jen
. And in Mari's school uniform is... me.
Got a lot of comments that we three looked like triplets since we were all about the same size too (except they had high heels on).
A lof of people didn't recognize me at first! I kind of expected it as I don't usually go to cons in such... drafty outfits. It was pretty funny seeing their reactions. Just as planned.
I've been obsessing over the series of Rebuild of Evangelion movies lately (because they are brilliant and the current Eva figures and Revoltechs being released are making my inner Eva geek go explody). Mari is my favorite character next to Kaworu. I find her so fascinating. She's delightfully eccentric, badass, and unpredictable. I can't wait to know more about her!
I mean, look at that face. A girl who makes that face is very cool in my book. I'd wear a drafty skirt to a con for her. Hahaha!
Unit-02. (Photo from Max Factory
)If I am to wear this cosplay out again I'd probably wait until I get Mari's proper headband so I don't have to use Rei's A10 nerve clips, hahah. And the correct plaid fabric for her skirt is proving to be difficult to find. The closest I could get was this - which happened to be the fabric of the girls' skirts for uniforms in my high school.
Sorry, Mari fans. I continue to deface your waifu.
Something that was a little new to us also about Cosmania was that we had a booth that we had to manage for both days. We had some Tuxessories
, prints of the Tekken art collab between me and ~merkymerx
Miguel, cute tumblers from EJ, spiral goggles from Dom, and some photo prints that were actually from ~moonlightflight
Kat's thesis for school.
While I was feeling pretty shy about having images of my face on display, but I'm glad they somehow managed to make some people happy. Thank you to everyone who dropped by our booth!
You guys are too nice. I don't think I had ever signed so many things in a day. I apologize for the often silly messages I left for people who had stuff signed! I still never quite know what to write on those things!
It was actually a really nice experience, having a booth at a con. The only setback was that we couldn't all go out to eat at the same time since there always has to be someone watching over it. Though it was cool. We had a pretty good view of the stage so we could sometimes watch whatever was going on. It also gave us a place to sit and rest after going around to see the booths (and photobombing). Like a base of sorts.
It was also a place where we could just sit around ang hang out with new friends.
This was the view from behind our booth. Lots of stuff going on all over the place. SMX as a venue was a refreshing change.
I was able to go around and take photos of some of the toys that were on display.
It would be cool if these were cosplayers, hahah.
Jeeg & Pantheron
Did someone say Robot Unicorn Attack? Wait, we're missing a horn here.
Brook from MegaHouse's Portrait of Pirates series
Hijikata making the Hijikata Special

DBZ! All the seven balls together! Someone make a wish!
This particular one caught our eye. EJ ~Dinkyass
said that Goku looks like he's just barely coming to terms with the realization that he's riding on a sled made from the halves of super saiyans.
VN02 Miku! It's gorgeous.
It inspired Miguel ~merkymerx
to draw this:
Kagamine Rin ~Meltdown~ figure, also by Max Factory.
Vocaloid Nendoroids. TAKO LUKAAAAA!
Saber Lily! Such wonderful movement.
And now for photos of actual people, most of which are not by me. Credits are on top of corresponding photos.(photo by Miguel ~merkymerx)
This shot is a bit blurry, but it's one of the few full-body shots from my camera. My friend used to tease me that I should cosplay Sailor Mars instead of Tuxedo Mask because I have her legs. So there you go, man. I'm utilizing my disproportionate legs for cosplay.
Also, it's going to start looking like my arms had been glued in this position for the whole day because while I did other poses, almost all of the photos from my camera have me in this one.(photo from Sammy ~flamable77)
We met Sammy ~flamable77
, a cosplayer from Baguio City. One of the golden moments of lulz for the day was when she was asking my friends if I was around, when I was right in front of her.
Sorry, Sammy! They are a crafty bunch, but in a nice way! But thank you for proving that my transformation was successful! Hahaha!(photo from Sammy ~flamable77)
Oh man ~Dinkyass
EJ's face at the back
Well played, sir.(photo by EJ ~Dinkyass)
On the way to the Slurpee corner to get drinks for my friends, I stumbled into someone in a big yellow coat, but I saw a familiar pink collar under it. And then I noticed the glasses... and the headband... It was Czari
as Mari in the pink plugsuit! (She took the coat off for this photo) We got a bit stuck posing for photos together, but it was alright because we were able to introduce ourselves to each other and chat while people asked for pictures.
Earlier during the day, Raymond ~cscentrl
introduced me to Jen
, who was also cosplaying Mari, but as I had mentioned earlier, in the Provisional Unit-05 plugsuit. The next two photos are some pretty shots for her by =KiraHokuten
My friends and I love this design, so we were thrilled to see someone actually cosplaying it.(photo by =KiraHokuten)
And Jen is one of the sweetest people I've had the pleasure to meet through cosplay! (photo by Alfred ~shimekops)
Ran into Dennis ~shutter-puppy
, Kathy ~katZ16
, Sese *seseostara
, Romi ~wildquaker
(and his sexy legs) and the others at the free Slurpee area.
asked if we could shoot Mari photos outside the con. I thankfully obliged and said I'd find Jen (Green Mari) and Czari (Pink Mari) to join us. I thought it wouldn't be too difficult as I had been frequently running into both of them before that. When I was purposely looking for them, they were suddenly nowhere to be found!(photo from ~reginepetrola)
Me and ~reginepetrola
Happy birthday! (photo from ~reginepetrola)
Photobomb, photobomb... Friendly neighborhood photobomb...(photo by Miguel ~merkymerx)
as the Galactic Fairy, Sheryl Nome. He is always fabulous.(photo by Erving ~Huzafan)
After some time, somehow, the Friendly Neighborhood Photobomb Squad managed to track down the two other Maris and we were all finally together. It was so cute when Jen and Czari finally met and observed and compared techniques on how they executed their plugsuits. (photo from Edward Albert Samoy)
The Macross Frontier group (with special guest Sese) avenged the people my friends photobomb, and groupbombed me. (photo by Miguel ~merkymerx)
Such a fun group!(photo from Edward Albert Samoy)
On a random note, if there's anything I like about this costume, it's the glasses. I chose clear red frames because I noticed that on Mari toys, her glasses are sometimes made of clear red plastic and I liked how that looked. I'm tempted to get these fitted with the right frames for my nearsightedness so I can use them everyday.(photo by Miguel ~merkymerx)
I'm not used to girl cosplay so Alfred had to direct me.(photo from Edward Albert Samoy)(photo from Edward Albert Samoy)(photo by Erving ~Huzafan)

wanted to do cutesy poses with their glasses too.(photo by me)

Mari Makinami is part of NERV. Judging by his face, Melo must hail from a company called PERV [link](photo by Alfred ~shimekops)
Four-Eyes Club again(photo by Miguel ~merkymerx)
We found this staircase and thought it was a bit reminiscent of Evangelion somehow, so we got some shots there.(photo by Alfred ~shimekops)
Dramaaaa.(photo by Alfred ~shimekops)
Shot and directed by Alfred ~shimekops

Alfred is so much fun to shoot with. He has all these ideas for shots and really gets into it when he's suggesting poses.
His devID says it all:
Howdy, Sheriff Woody! He actually had a pull-string on his back. Miguel pretended to tug it and whispered "Reach for the skyyyy"
Heyyyy you're not Unit-02.
Throughout the day we were also admiring this Dhalsim. Melo got in touch with his inner E. Honda
Tux Team and our new friends from Davao, including Cosplay TorCH finalists Duane ~Du-Ai-Ni
Dennis is doing the Mari pose too! Miguel: HURRRRRR DURRRRR
Dom: DERP DERP(photo by Dennis ~shutter-puppy)
Melo has yet again deemed himself uncroppable, and Miguel has decided to temporarily stop doing DURR faces.
a.k.a. Shoti and Kat (photo by Dennis)
Posing with a print before we signed it with our super teamwork message.
It was getting pretty late and after a full day of lots of interviews, meeting people, taking pictures, Mari-hunting, photobombing, helping each other manage the booth and the usual running around for whatever reason, we were all exhausted. While packing up for the day, my ears picked up on some music so I look toward the stage and see this iconic figure DJ-ing and dancing...
! I had fun taking photos because he was so dynamic, and because of the smoke and colored lights.
Pretty awesome way to end the night, yeah.

Now that I'm done with my account of the day, here are sights from around the con from the eyes (or shutters) of other attendees! Photos from Otakultura

Most people are tired of Death Note cosplays by now, but I personally love when people do creative twists like this.
His shot of ~Jesuke
as Megurine Luka during Day One
She looked so pretty!
He also took this photo of a ~Meltdown~ Kagamine Rin cosplayer

Speaking of toys... The toy soldier from earlier!
I always enjoy seeing Kamen Rider cosplayers.

I must say I really appreciated the stage setup. The lights and smoke gave these cosplayers a great setting to showcase their costumes.
Mr. Clive Lee ~miragecld
, one of our guests from Singapore! I was totally blown away by his Gundam cosplay. Truly epic. I wish we had been able to catch his mecha workshop! Click here for the full photo set!
Do you have photos/photobombs of us?
If you were one of the people we took pictures with (intentionally or otherwise) during Cosmania, I'd love to see our photos together. If you saw pictures we photobombed somewhere, we'd like to see that too.
My friends and I love collecting snapshots to look back on the fun we've had during events.

My thoughts on Cosplay Mania X as a whole
Reposting: Thank you for your heartfelt letters
Yet again, I apologize since I am unable to respond to messages as much as I would want to, given the number I receive and the time I allot myself to spend on dA. I do my best to log in a few times a week to check my inbox and read as many messages as I can. When I get to read comments that I can make a short response to, I do just that. Others require more time, though.
Although I have not been able to reply to most of you yet - please know that I truly appreciate every heartfelt message that I get to read. Thank you so much. I say this a lot because I feel like I'm never able to catch up with the amount of messages I get. No matter how many times I post a message like this, I still mean it every time. Thank you.
I'll be honest about something. One factor that leads to my being unable to reply is because some people send letters that leave me completely overwhelmed (and sometimes teary-eyed). And I feel like whatever reply I can send them given the little dA time I have won't be good enough, because that they deserve better. When I am in the proper mindset and have the time, I will get around to writing back. So to you guys - I hope for your understanding for now, and I hope you know that your letters keep me sharing here.
